For developers: 2 bugs in last hercules snapshots . Please, take attention!

akleschov
Hi,

how to report hercules bugs to developers?

I find 2 serios bugs, both reported in this conference  more then month ago (1 by me,second by other boys), but nothing fixed yet.

Please, take attention!

Please, send this message to developers or write how to do it!

1) Cannot IPL zOS 1.9 using snapshot later then 2009-feb-07 due to

wait state 9064 rised.

I tried HERC20090209.ZIP and last snapshots binary on Windows XP
but had "SYSTEM WAIT STATE CODE 80009064".

In previous snashots (include HERC20090207.ZIP) everything work fine.
See z\OS console message below:

IEA304W SYSTEM WAIT STATE CODE 80009064 DURING IEAVNP26 INITIALIZATION

2) Cannot IPL from any '.ins' file using last snapshots due to 'permission denied' error.

But old 3.06 hercules doesn't generate this error.

This bug reported many times in this conference and reproduced on my computer with Windows XP.

Best regards, Alex

I know nothing about Hercules fixes but would
use something more current for testing:

Most if not all see messages in this forum.

This is a volunteer effort, people do have lives and get to things when they can. Part of Open Source is that users help try to isolate problems.

Since you are running software that most do not have access to may I suggest the following.

There are a number of fixes in the February 7 and 8th time frame. Since everything is under SVN it is possible to check out the code at the February 7th level and then apply each fix individually. See which one causes the problem and then report back here. If you put in the effort to try to isolate the problem people may be more willing to help. After all this is open source not a proprietary piece of software.

See above statement on isolating the problem

This is the right place to report bugs. But remember that the developers all work on Hercules in their spare time, so whether the bugs get fixed can depend very much on how busy the developers happen to be with their real jobs at the time. As Laddie rightly pointed out, the more work you do to isolate exactly which modification caused the bug, the better the chance that it will be fixed.

There is no harm in posting a reminder once a month or so, if it looks like your bug has been forgotten.

Which reminds me, a couple of months ago "John4096" (do you have a real name?) posted some fixes for Hercules on Cygwin. I do intend to follow these up but I have been too busy with real work recently, and I guess the other developers must be equally busy too because nobody has picked it up yet.

Ian (who happens to have the same initials as me and always confuses the
hell out of me when he signs 'isw' - you're "Ian S. Worthington" - and I
am "Ivan S. Warren" - same initials ! freaky !)

You're problem is being actively looked into.. And is puzzling most of
our household experts (Namely Jan & Greg - and me as an accessory)!

We're not forgetting you.. But you always seem to be digging those hard
to find problems - which.. Is a good thing !

When Greg did his own change - he had a good reason.. And I'd trust Greg
on this anytime ! Greg understands ILC and interrupt handling better
than most of us ever will..

When Jan made a change to the PSW update relating to the computed ILC,
I'm quite sure he had a very good reason to do so.. So just backing it
out on a whim is not the good answer.. Jan understands SIE better than
most of us ever will !

So they are both wrong and they are both right ! See the Dilemna ? There
is certainly a solution that fits both issues..

Just leave them/us time ! eventually, we'll figure it out.. in the
meantime, use your patch to run whatever it is you need running.. But I
guarantee.. we will straighten this out.. eventually !

I've not forgotten this problem.  I do confess to not being as active in
hercules in the last few months as I would like to be.  I guess my
interests circle around.  It takes a while to get familiar with the code
again.

Hi developers,

thanks everybody for answer.

Hercules is the best thing in the world! Thanks for it!

I just tried to IPL z/OS 1.9 using w32-hercules-svn-5292.zip snapshot from site http://www.ivansoftware.com/snapshots/snapshots/ and it IPL-ed fine!

But I am confusing: where are latest snapshots now?
In previous I download them from : http://www.ivansoftware.com/snapshots/snapdload.html

Where is the right place to download last snapshot now?

So, the 1-st bug is fixed: zOS 1.9 IPL-ed fine. Thanks very much!

But the 2-nd bug in last snapshot persist: you cannot IPL from any '.ins' file.
Everybody can test it without any preparation:
only start your usual configuration file and type "IPL zzz.ins" (don't mention this file is not exist!). You will have undocumented message:

HHCSC001E Load from zzz.ins failed: Permission denied

Seems it is not a bug: IPL functionality is specially restricted.
But message is undocumented, so users confused. This feature work fine in Hercules 3.06.

Best regards, Alex

The latest snapshots are as above. These are built from the SVN source
repository..

I think these are there so you can still get previous snapshots, but they
use the code from CVS which is no longer updated.

This must have something to do with the new SCLPROOT configuration
statement and panel command, which was added immediately after 3.06 to
plug a possible security loophole identified by Peter Sylvester.

There is no documentation written yet for SCLPROOT, but here is an
informal description:

If one IPL's from a .ins file then all I/O is restricted to the
directory/branch the .ins file resides in.
If a regular (ie device) ipl is performed then no SCLP disk I/O is allowed.
The SCLPROOT panel command may be used to enable/disable SCLP disk I/O.
syntax: SCLPROOT: <no args> returns the current setting
SCLPROOT /some/directory/path:  sets the directory/branch from which I/O
is allowed (a subsequent ipl of a .ins file will override this)
SCLPROOT none: disable SCLP disk I/O

Apparently this mechanism is not working properly on Windows systems.
I suspect it may not be handling \ and / correctly. Someone will look
into this, and update the documentation, as soon as they get some
spare time. Thanks for reporting this bug.
